Keeping Tab Of Your Birds

Part of the fun of bird watching is keeping a count of the many diverse birds you have sighted. The bird listing is usually done in a journal or equivalent instrument.

Life List

A life list is a record of the species of birds you’ve sighted over time. The sightings are listed in a journal or diary. Each entry notes the bird species, the date, location and any notes you want to add. The birder may keep one master list or several lists according to classifications, or whichever he prefers.

Experienced birders prefer several lists which offer several conveniences. If you are a birder and want several lists, how would you go about it? Here are a few ideas.

Home List. This is a list of birds that you see in your immediate vicinity.

The Yearly List. This one is a listing of birds sighted during a specific year.

State Lists. A record of birds sighted within a state.

Trip Lists. Journals for particular bird watching vacations or tours.

Wish Lists. A list of birds you haven’t seen, but hope to. Every time you See one in the list, you mark it accordingly.

The Computer Life List

You can purchase computer life list programs or use online variations. Each program is different, but most come in a checklist format. You supply the details and the programs will sort a list for you.

The computer life list is very useful, but it has its drawbacks. Unless you are willing to lug a laptop around with you, there is going to be a delay between sightings and your journal entries. Additionally, the computer life lists are not designed to record your sketches or illustrations of rare or beautiful birds. At the same time, the computer life lists has many advantages so you can keep one for whatever purpose it may serve you.

Bird watching is an extremely personal passion. Some beginners make the mistake of not taking any notes of their observations. Once they are hooked up with the hobby and become avid birdwatchers, only then would they realize their mistake. Whatever sightings they have experienced will be written in the sands of time.
