Put Some Life In Your Yard With A Bird Feeder
Getting close to nature can be as simple as installing a bird feeder in a garden or backyard. Birds are attracted by the convenient meal and humans get the pleasure of watching these feathered creatures frolic and play. Different species of birds will be attracted to different types of food and the type of feeder chosen will be determined by the type of food set out. With a little bit of research it is easy to determine which type of feeder is right for any location.
A common type of feeder for attracting songbirds is the seed feeder. Designs can vary with some using hoppers and trays and others using tubes to deliver the food. Sunflower seeds are used to lure finches, chickadees and cardinals.
One of the most popular types of feeders seen everywhere is made for luring hummingbirds. These are usually filled with bright red nectar and consist of a reservoir suspended on top of several feeding ports. The saucer design is more convenient for attachment to deck rails or poles and in this configuration the feeding ports are located above the nectar container.
Suet is the preferred feed for nuthatches, many species of woodpeckers and flickers. A suet block is placed inside a small cage made out of metal and the birds can peck at it through the holes.
A ground feeder sits low to the ground and the bottom is made out of metal and has holes in it to allow water to drain off and keep the feed from spoiling. Foraging birds like sparrows, juncos and doves are attracted to these feeders. The seed pan will be removable in many of these feeders to allow for easy cleaning. Consumers can choose between models that have a roof and those that do not.
The bird feeder installed should be appropriate for the environment. There are several affordable models that are easy to set up. Place a shallow birdbath near the feeder and the birds will not be able to resist the urge to hang out in this sanctuary built just for them.
