Guide To Different Bird Feeder Types
Some people have started looking for a bird feeder for their yard. There are many types of bird feeders available so having an idea of where to mount or hang it will play a large part in what to select. This is an outline of the various bird feeders available.
Probably the most common type of feeder is a wood hopper feeder. It may just be called a wood feeder or hopper feeder as well. This type of feeder is made of wood so it has a design that will blend in with the wooded area around it. It is very easy to refill since the top will open and allow for feed to be poured in. The food is also protected from the elements because of the roof. The negative of this type of feeder is that other animals, especially squirrels, will steal the food out of it.
A tube feeder is an equally common feeder. This style can be pole mounted or hung from many different places. This system refills easily because the top comes off and seed is poured into it. There is an option of getting a longer tube that holds more food although that does cost a bit more money. Animals will steal food from this feeder as well although they may damage it by chewing on the sides.
A platform feeder is set up like the bowl of a fountain. Birds can perch on the edges of the feeder or rest in the bowl itself. Since there are no walls on a platform feeder a bird can easily escape if there is trouble in the area. The feeder is open to other animals also though, so be alert on where it is put.
Another type of tube feeder is a peanut feeder. It is different because it is made of wire and is loaded with peanuts rather than bird feed. This feeder is handy if woodpeckers or starlings are taking food from other birds at feeders in the yard.
Many people hang a bird feeder to attract birds to watch in the yard. Deciding what type of feeder to get can be confusing if you do not know the differences. Remember to consider the types of birds you want to see and how often you are willing to refill it.
