Steps For Making A Basic Bird Feeder With Easy
If you are looking to put a new or even a second or third bird feeder on your property, you won’t need to go to the store and spend lots of money for one. You can build a really inexpensive feeder with stuff you have at home. It’s simple and fast, and you won’t need much in the way of supplies either.
What you need to begin the project is a simple one gallon milk jug. Wash it out thoroughly first to be sure there is no leftover crud from the milk. When it’s dry, place the cap on the jug and move on to the next step.
On each side of the handle, cut openings that are about 3 inches in diameter. The openings need to be pretty high on the jug so the bird seed won’t leak out of the jug when you are ready to use it.
Below the big openings, take a nail and punch a small hole where you are going to insert dowels. The dowels are the perches from which the birds will nibble on the food. Just be sure that each perch sticks out a couple inches so birds can easily perch.
Use your nail again to punch openings in the milk jug neck. Make your holes an inch or two below the cap of the milk jug. Then get some wire and run it through the pockets, and twist it together on top. That is what you are going to use to hang up your bird feeder.
Your homemade bird feeder is all finished. Now it’s time to load it up with birdseed. Take it out to your backyard and use those wire ends to suspend it from a tree or really any support that locates it the birds will find secure and attractive. If you would like to try attracting a variety of different birds, go with black oil sunflower seeds.
