The Low Down On The Famous Pheasant
Pheasant hunting on a Saturday morning is an American tradition and a way of life for hunters. The scientific name of the common pheasant is Phasianus Colchicus. This bird is tremendously prized by bird hunters.
You’ll find pheasants mostly in woodland areas but they are also in grasslands. They like to eat stuff like spiders, grasshoppers, worms, slugs, and centipedes or millipedes. These kinds of invertebrates make for a delightful treat for these exquisite birds. They love to also feed on a variety of grains and berries. At night, these gorgeous fowl will roost up in the trees and at daybreak they will peck the ground for some tasty treats.
Pheasants is a term commonly used for quail, partridge, or ruffed grouse. Ring-necked pheasant is a regal bird that was introduced into the United States in 1857. The male, known as the cock, has dazzling brown plumage with a green, purple marking with a white ring surrounding the neck. The plumage of the female pheasant is much duller in appearance and has more of a brownish speckled look. Both the female and male have yellowish stout beaks and rounded short wings. The male can have a tail over 20 inches long and it often has long sharp spurs that often protects it from other wild animals.
In some locations, pheasant populations have dropped somewhat due to environmental challenges such as land clearing and air pollution. In many regions in the United States pheasant farming seems to be a good solution for guaranteeing future generations. In the United States, pheasants populations have declined due to many factors. Farms allow for better managed populations.
Out west on the Great Plains, you will find that there are an abundance of pheasants in the open fields and around old farm houses. The birds absolutely love to peck around on the grasses for grains and insects in the fields and roost around old homeplaces and farming implements. The United Kingdom has a lot more pheasants than we do here in the United States. In the United States, it is estimated that there are about 10 million pheasants while in the UK there are approximately 35 million.
During the spring, the males will begin courting females by strutting. The head on the male will become bright red and engorged with.feathers puffed out as the male begins strutting in a courtship dance. Males will fight each other until the death at times in order to win the reading rights with a female.
Male birds are polyamorous because they will mate with more than one female throughout their lifetime. It is common to find more than one female following the male at any one time. The females nest on the ground and will have about 10 eggs per nest. The eggs will be incubated by 23 to 26 days before hatching. Usually this occurs in the late spring and early summer starting in April through June.
